WOSH v1.0 — User Guide

WOSH is a gesture-driven spatial whoosh designer. You draw the path a sound takes through 3D space, and WOSH synthesises the result with physically-modelled spatial audio. Every sound responds to where you draw, how fast you draw, and which character you choose.

Quick Start

Draw a line across the canvas — this is the path your sound will travel. Hit TRIGGER or press Space to play it. Hit RANDOM or press R to generate a new sound and play immediately.

The Canvas

The canvas represents a 20m wide by 10m tall spatial field with you (the listener) at the centre. The grid shows metre markings. Left edge is 10m to your left. Right edge is 10m to your right. Top is 5m above. Bottom is 5m below. When you draw a line from left to right, the sound passes across 20 metres of space.

Drawing Modes

Freehand: Click and drag to draw a path. The speed you draw at determines the speed the sound travels.

Straight line: Click once to set a start point, click again to set the end. Longer lines produce longer sounds.

Shift+drag: Constrains to horizontal or vertical axis.

Edit nodes: After drawing, drag the small handles on the path to reshape it. Each node only affects the segment between its neighbours.

Clear: Click the canvas (when a stroke exists) to clear, or press Esc.

Characters

NOISE: Pure broadband noise. Air, wind, organic textures.

TONAL: Pitched sweeps. UI sounds, precise motion.

HARSH: Metallic, aggressive. Comb filtering, ring modulation.

MASSIVE: Sub-bass weight. Deep rumble, cinematic scale.

SHIMMER: Chorused, bright. 5-voice unison, phaser, delay trails.

CHAOS: Unpredictable. Extreme FM, glitch, randomised modulation.

DRONE: Sustained textures. Long pads, evolving timbres.

SUB: Pure sub-bass. Fundamentals at 20-50Hz, felt more than heard. Huge low-end movement.

Simple / Advanced

Use the toggle in the top-right corner. Simple mode hides all controls for a clean interface — just draw, pick a character, and trigger. Switch to Advanced to reveal the full control panel: Spatial (Scale, Speed, Width, Distance), Layers (Air, Tone, Body, Energy), FX (Trail, Delay, Phaser, Vibrato, Wobble, Comb), Motion (Doppler, AutoPan, Glide), and an Envelope selector.

Spatial Controls (Advanced)

Scale: Stretches or compresses playback duration. Centre = 1:1 with your gesture timing.

Speed: Inverse of Scale. Higher = faster playback.

Width: Horizontal spatial field. 0% = narrow (6m), 100% = full (20m).

Distance: How close the object passes. 0% = 0.8m (right past your head), 100% = 8m (far away).

Spatial Model

WOSH models 12 spatial cues simultaneously, all driven from one 3D distance calculation: Volume (inverse distance), lowpass (air absorption), mid-frequency shelf, high-frequency shelf, proximity bass boost (+12dB below 120Hz at close range), ground reflection (single discrete early reflection), reverb wet/dry ratio with look-ahead pre-echo (reverb swells before the object arrives), pre-delay gap, interaural time difference, head shadow (per-ear HF darkening), stereo width (narrows at distance), and Doppler pitch shift (physics-based, speed of sound = 343 m/s).

FX Controls (Advanced)

Trail: Convolution reverb amount.

Delay: Tempo delay send level.

Phaser: 4-stage allpass phaser depth.

Vibrato: Pitch modulation rate.

Wobble: Filter modulation rate.

Comb: Comb filter resonance (metallic character).

Export

Press EXPORT or E to render a WAV file. Choose sample rate (44.1/48/96 kHz), bit depth (16/24/32-float), and mono/stereo. Exports include LIST INFO metadata.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Space Trigger/Stop · R Random · E Export · Esc Clear · Shift+drag Constrain axis

Tips

Switch to Advanced mode to access all controls. Set Distance to 0% for dramatic close pass-bys with proximity bass boost. Use straight-line mode (click-click) for clean sweeps. Try SUB or MASSIVE with Distance at 0% for gut-punch bass. The speed you draw at directly controls playback speed — draw fast for a quick whoosh, slow for a dramatic pass. Double-click any knob to reset to 50%. Use headphones for the full spatial effect.
